Beery and Howard are Union soldiers during the Civil War who escape from a Confederate prison and head back to friendly ground. Along the way, they pick up Del Rio, a Russian emigre who's killed a Confederate officer. From the dead officer, they take a map of Confederate positions which
aids their travels through enemy lines. Beery gets the map to Grant's headquarters, becomes a hero, and wins Del Rio. This was Del Rio's first film for MGM in twelve years and her first screen appearance in two.
