A Man Called Sledge: Review

Garner is a bandit who robs a gold shipment with the help of his crony, Weaver, and a band of outlaws. The group has a falling out over how the shipment should be split, and the gold is stolen from Garner and Weaver by the rest of the group. The two friends track them down to a Mexican town, and engage in a bloody shootout during a religious festival. The film was directed by film and TV actor Vic Morrow, who brings a distinctive American flair to this Italian production. He tosses in a large dose of religious symbolism, which is typical of spaghetti westerns (the troops guarding the gold shipment travel in a cross formation; the gold is hidden behind the church altar during the climactic gunfight; Garner uses a cross as a splint for his broken arm so he can shoot his gun; Antonelli is tortured in a church by the band of outlaws). There are no heroes in this film, which makes it hard to identify with anyone, but the film moves at a good pace with a mood that will linger after the ending credits. (In English.) leave a comment
