One of the rare Hollywood films about religion not to drown in piety, A MAN CALLED PETER is a fine biography of Peter Marshall, the Scotsman who became the US Senate's chaplain. Marshall appealed to young and old in his sermons, as will this picture, a good yarn combining interesting sentiments and solid production values. Todd is captivating as Marshall, as is Peters as his wife, upon whose memoirs the film was based. She must cope with Marshall's tuberculosis and derives her strength from his sermons, as does Sen. Harvey (Tremayne), who resolves to clean up politics in his home state. There are struggles along the way, most of which arise from Marshall's unconventional treatment of religion as a living thing rather than as a repository of dead tradition. The message is never blatant, however, even in Marshall's fascinating sermons, and the performances are all excellent under Koster's typically smooth direction. Shot in and around Washington, DC, the movie looks as good as it sounds, with preachiness put aside in favor of the very down-to-earth story of two people who are devoted to each other. leave a comment
