A post nuclear-holocaust story that slips into sappy melodrama about the future of mankind and the condition of the human animal. A group survives the blast by taking shelter in a wine cellar in a chateau named Malevil. They come out of the cellar to find a wasteland. They begin again by growing wheat in the nearby fields and rebuilding the chateau. Soon they discover a band of people,living in train cars in a mountain tunnel, who are led by an insane fascist (Trintignant), who is killed quickly. The train people join the survivors at the chateau. As things seem to be going well, helicopters from the new government arrive to take everyone to a 1984-style city. Three people escape the government relocation, one a pregnant young woman. The screenplay was adapted from the novel by Merle, who withdrew his name from the film's credits. leave a comment
