In this remake of the 1924 silent film MERTON OF THE MOVIES, Erwin plays a small-town grocery clerk who dreams of becoming a Hollywood star. He arrives in the City of Dreams and fast-talks his way through the gates of a large movie studio. He meets Blondell, a movie extra, who gets him a part in a comedy western. He plays the role in total seriousness and at the preview realizes that he's been had. While he is packing his bags to go home, Blondell rushes over and explains the great future he can have as a comedian. Director Beaudine utilized much of the Paramount lot, including the studio restaurant, the cutting rooms, the entrance of the music building, and the sets of DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE; MADAME RACKETEER; and DEVIL AND THE DEEP (stars of the latter film, Gary Cooper and Tallulah Bankhead, make cameo appearances in this film). An enjoyable comedy that gives a nostalgic look at Hollywood's golden age. leave a comment
