HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT
starstarstarstar
An effective tearjerker from defanged feminist Jocelyn Moorhouse (PROOF). Dewy Winona Ryder is confused about everything, especially marriage. So she retires to grandma Ellen Burstyn's house to work on her master's thesis and sort things out. Little does she imagine the kind of sentimental education she's about to get from the local quilting circle, a PC posse comprising Anne Bancroft, Maya Angelou, Kate Nelligan, Jean Simmons, Lois Smith and Alfre Woodard. Among them they can summon up enough stories of romance, passion, betrayal and soul-searing loss to stock a season's worth of Oprah shows. And they do. Contrived? Sure. Predictable? Mostly. Soapy? You bet. But with a cast like this, who cares? leave a comment
