Taylor plays a drunk whose reckless behavior causes the death of Dunne's husband. Taylor has an accident and is taken to the hospital where the late physician was beloved. He tries to make his regrets known to Dunne, and she walks away from him, then is hit by a car and blinded. This accident, compounded by the death of Dunne's husband, causes the wastrel to dedicate his life to becoming a doctor so he can operate on Dunne and restore her vision.
