A boy's best friend is his dog — even if it's dead — in this easy-going children's movie. After his mother's death, Toby (Bryan Mendez) hopes to continue living with his stepfather, Chet (Leo Milbrook). But that desire conflicts with the greedy wishes of Toby's venal Aunt Violet (Kate Doughan), who hires a fancy lawyer to obtain legal custody. Chet tries to keep Violet at bay while going out on a series of disastrous dates in hopes of remarrying and solidifying his paternal status. Naturally, the perfect woman is right under Chet's nose: New neighbor Phoebe (Jessica Knoblauch), whom Chet trusts to babysit for Toby, would make the ideal second wife. As Toby begins bonding with Phoebe, he experiences a second profound loss. Toby's beloved dog, Lucky, is run over by a car while chasing a pair of half-witted burglars, Larry (Jerry Turner) and Harry (John Ermin), whom Violet hired to break into Chet's home and steal legal documents belonging to her late sister. Despite their incompetence, Harry and Larry do manage to steal Chet's file box, frighten Toby and Phoebe, and deliver into Violet's hands the only copy of the document that grants Chet sole custody of Toby, which Violet replaces it with a forged version that favors her. But Toby now has a protector: Lucky magically returns as an invisible canine sworn to do his supernatural utmost to protect his young master. Toby and Lucky start their campaign against Violet by convincing Harry and Larry that they've been cursed, but the real challenge is finding the custody document Violet has hidden away. The actors try gamely to smooth over screenwriter Hamilton Underwood's lazily developed complications by mugging up a storm, but it's a losing battle.
