The action-packed cops-and-robbers thriller was directed with maximum punch by Don Siegel and cowritten by Abraham Polonsky, who'd been blacklisted in the '50s. After NYPD detectives Madigan and Bonaro (Richard Widmark and Harry Guardino) badly botch the arrest of a wanted murderer, the police commissioner (Henry Fonda) gives them 72 hours to catch the killer.
