This grim drama stars Moreau as a sexually repressed, psychopathic, small-village teacher who manages to disguise her psychosis until the arrival of handsome Italian woodcutter, Manni. He enrolls his son, Orsini, in Moreau's class. As a stranger in the little farming village, Manni is mistrusted by the locals. When the community suddenly is plagued by a series of floods, fires, and animal poisonings, the villagers immediately assume that Manni is responsible. In reality, Moreau is committing the crimes. She seems to get an almost carnal pleasure from her misdeeds, which culminate in her seduction of Manni, who she then claims raped her. This pushes the villagers to the breaking point, and they seek the Italian out and stone him to death. Moreau, feigning a need to leave town due to her painful memories, packs her bags and moves on with only Orsini knowing the truth. (French and English versions.) leave a comment
