This little gangster film features Cassavetes as a hardened criminal released from prison after twelve years, thanks to the political influence of Falk, a Mafia chieftain. Cassavetes' son, Apra, gets his old man to help him in the robbery of a small Las Vegas casino on behalf of Falk's West Coast crime empire. When Falk learns that the casino is owned by some East Coast mobsters, he calls off the robbery. Cassavetes meets Ekland and the two are hastily married. Apra is killed by some of Falk's goons and the newlyweds take to bombing various Las Vegas casinos. After disguising himself as a fireman, Cassavetes pulls off a two-million-dollar robbery from a hotel safe and the East Coast mobsters want him dead. Falk is killed and Cassavetes' old girl friend and partner in crime, Rowlands (who was Cassavetes' real-life wife), helps him and his new wife escape. Rather than tell all to the mob, Rowlands commits suicide. The film climaxes with Ekland shot en route to a rendezvous with her man and Cassavetes dying in a hail of machine-gun fire. This cheap little Italian feature was made originally in 1968. Its lovers-on-the-run theme and death-by-machine-gun sequence give it more than a striking resemblance to BONNIE AND CLYDE, which undoubtedly was no accident. This was the sort of junk film in which Cassavetes continually appeared in order to finance his own artistic endeavors, such as FACES (1968). leave a comment
