Another version of the Pabst film, which had its basis in the dramatic plays of Frank Wedekind and the opera of Alban Berg. This American version of the story is certainly different from the others in that it is told silently, with title cards rather than the spoken word. The story is of a nymphomaniac's rise in society through a succession of successful marriages and her ultimate fall when she murders one husband and then is killed by Jack the Ripper. Told mainly in tight close-ups, the film is explicitly violent and never quite conveys the "feeling" of a silent film. If this was the intent of the production, it is foiled by the inclusion of one speaking character in the cast. leave a comment
