This ramshackle family-reunion flick wastes fine actors in the service of a script that boasts not a single moment of emotional validity. Headstrong Lidda (Kirsten Dunst) is tired of her dead-end life in Tulsa, Okla., with her mom and mom's boyfriend. So on her 18-birthday Lidda decides to head for Las Vegas and look up Charlie Doyle (James Caan), the ne'er-do-well father who abandoned her during childhood. Lidda hooks up with wet-behind-the-ears aspiring gambler Colonel (Vincent Kartheiser), who accompanies her to Sin City to avoid paying a $4000 debt. En route, Lidda and Colonel develop a romantic bond. A veteran card shark and ex-con, Charlie is an independent type whose aloofness irritates his former associate, Tony DiCarlo (Robert Miano), a strip club owner. Not only does Charlie refuse to go into a new business venture with Tony, but he catches the eye of Tony's girlfriend, Sugar (Jennifer Garies). Newly arrived in Vegas, Colonel gambles at Charlie's table without realizing he's competing against a living legend. Ignoring Charlie's prudent advice, Colonel later loses Lidda's travel money at another game of chance. When Lidda finally comes face to face with Charlie, the perpetual rolling stone rejects her. He's doing it for her own good, but she gets caught up in his troubles anyway. Tony is seething about having lost at cards to Charlie and kidnaps Lidda in hopes of forcing Charlie to fork over his winnings. Rejected by Charlie and exploited by Colonel, Lidda must try to survive captivity in Tony's volatile care and make some mature decisions about who deserves her trust. This second-hand drama feels cobbled together from other bogus relationship movies, but it's a nice showcase for talented youngsters Dunst and Kartheiser. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
