There is nothing duller than a dull comedy, because when the jokes fail to hit the funny bone, the dialog can seem very tired indeed. Colman proved he could play the devil out of comedy in pictures (CHAMPAGNE FOR CAESAR is the best example) but not if he didn't have the material in the script or the right direction. Milestone may have been terrific for ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT and OF MICE AND MEN, but asking him to direct a comedy is like asking Mickey Rooney to slam-dunk.
