This early film in the directorial career of Scandinavian actress and feminist filmmaker Zetterling traces the lives of three women about to give birth in a hospital. The film, set in 1915, examines why they became pregnant and their attitudes about their condition. Lindblom bitterly resents the middle class and has married a servant of a wealthy family. Though she doesn't love her husband, she conceives a child out of spite and receives the news coldly that the baby is stillborn. Andersson is a wild, irresponsible woman who was introduced to sex at a very early age by an old man. Since then she has become a model and occasional thief who sleeps around. Through a series of events she winds up seducing the son of the rich family that employs Lindblom's husband and she becomes pregnant by him. He agrees to support the child if she will consent to marry a homosexual friend and pretend the child is the friend's. She agrees and has the baby while flirting with the doctor who delivers it. Petre is a quiet and unassuming woman who had a brief lesbian encounter while in school but then fell in love with an archaeologist and became pregnant by him. When he refuses to take responsibility for the act, she becomes outraged and joins a feminist movement dedicated to breaking the taboo of having illegitimate children. Eventually she has her baby and is the only one of the three women who looks forward to caring for a child. Zetterling's films were considered quite controversial at the time of their release. Today her earlier works are remarkable for their taboo-breaking stances, but they tend to be weak in characterization and execution. leave a comment
