Lovin' Molly: Review

A forty-year menage a trois, Texas-style. Danner is the liberated woman who manages to hold the long-term attention of two close buddies, played by Perkins and Bridges. The film opens in 1925, introducing the two farm boys and the woman they both love. Through the use of a voice-over we are propelled to 1945: Danner has married Fowkes, but he soon leaves her a widow; Perkins has married and fathered two kids; Bridges remains single. Danner still holds the two men at bay, as the affairs continue. The film's high point occurs in 1964, with Perkins finally succumbing to a heart attack, and Danner and Bridges ending up together. Danner is the real standout here, giving an excellent performance. The sense of wildness she captures and the slow aging she affects are completely natural. She has something few American film actresses ever get their hands on, a role she can really sink her teeth into. The story spans too large a time frame, however, and Lumet's direction shows no feeling for the story or the place. He also didn't treat Texas as a unique place. The film could as easily have been set in New Jersey. McMurtry, who wrote the original novel the film was based on, spoke out against the film's direction, claiming that because of it the film had not been a true reflection of the author's work. leave a comment
