The Loves Of Three Queens

1954, Movie, NR, 90 mins

Lamarr must decide which costume to wear to a prestigious ball, so she asks for advice from three male friends. One suggests she come as Helen of Troy, another says she is like Empress Josephine, Napoleon's mistress, and the third advises she dress as Genieve de Brabant. But Lamarr doesn't feel that any of them fully suit her personality. Essentially the idea is best signified in the Italian title ETERNAL WOMAN, which tells us that the film is about the essence of women. Not exceptionally well-made, the picture can boast an interesting combination of directors--France's Marc Allegret and Edgar Ulmer, who after beginning as an assistant to Max Reinhardt and F.W. Murnau, found that he didn't quite fit into the Hollywood mold. The picture was produced by the production company that Lamarr formed. Originally the picture ran over three hours, but was mercifully cut. A fine score by Nino Rota helps. leave a comment
