Notorious for its extended seminude love-making scene when first released in 1959, Louis Malle's THE LOVERS seems tame today when compared with average "R" rated films of the decades following it. The film tells the simple tale of Moreau, a bored mother and wife, who meets, falls in love with, and sleeps with young archaeologist Bory--all in the course of one evening. The next morning she abandons her family and runs off with her new lover to an uncertain future. The film was vastly overrated due to the censorship it incurred overseas and in the US. (A suburban Cleveland theater manager was prosecuted for showing an obscene film. The case went to the Supreme Court and was eventually thrown out.) The film is a solid but not great examination of female mid-life crisis, with Moreau in typically fine form. leave a comment
