An intriguing romance that is a modern version of "Romeo and Juliet," as the title suggests. Story takes place while a film crew is attempting to film the play, with Aimee and Reggiani as stand-ins for the film's leads who fall in love on the set. Instead of personal grudges between the two feuding families, troubles erupt because Reggiani comes from a working-class background, while Aimee's parents were Fascists and aristocrats who no longer enjoy the power they had during the war. Family stress leads the affair to a tragic end; Reggiani is killed by one of Aimee's relatives in the studio where the filming is taking place, and Aimee takes her own life, falling across the prostrate body of her lover. Aimee was only 17 when she starred in THE LOVERS OF VERONA, and was already on her way to enticing audiences with the mystifying grace with which she filled the screen.
