Heavy-handed melodrama takes place in a small Chinese fishing village where two young fishermen are rivals for the hand of a woman. Though the woman is in love with only one of the men, she is kept from marrying him out of obligation to the other. The expected tragic ending is avoided when
the unwanted suitor falls in love with someone else. But tragedy lifts its head anyway in fatal irony when the two men, now again friends, sail out to sea and vanish. According to tradition, two new rock figures appear on the beach, representing men lost at sea, who have left their women
behind.
