Formula material in this male Cinderella story has Montgomery as a playwright who's had nothing but hard luck his entire life: from his childhood, during which he is continually beaten for cutting the school he hates, to his underpaid job on a South African plantation. Evans walks into the
picture while Montgomery is in South Africa, and the two immediately take to each other. She drops her intended, Owen, to marry Montgomery, who finally gets a chance to produce some plays. Cast plods its way through the script, which adds some witty dialog to try and make up for the formulistic
approach.
