Perhaps the best Hudson-Day film, LOVER COME BACK features the popular screwball couple as advertising agents pitted against each other in the high-tension world of Madison Avenue. Working for rival agencies, the two are mortal enemies who are aware of each other's existence but have never met. Fed up with Hudson's questionable tactics (he snares big accounts from clients, using such enticements as martinis and beautiful women), Day reports him to the Advertising Council. Hudson parries by sending beautiful chorus girl Adams to speak on his behalf. She seduces the tribunal into dropping the charges. As a reward for a job well done, Hudson makes Adams his "VIP" girl and films a series of commercials for a nonexistent product. The nervous and confused president of the firm, Randall, mistakenly televises the spots, forcing the company to invent a product named VIP. Nutty scientist Kruschen is hired to perform the task, and Day, determined to get a piece of the action for her firm, decides to do anything to steal the account. Mistaking Hudson for the inventor, she allows Hudson to wine and dine her. When she learns the truth, she again reports him to the Advertising Council, accusing him of selling a nonexistent product. Luckily Kruschen comes up with a new, mint-flavored candy to be sold as VIP, and Hudson brings it to the hearing as evidence, letting everyone, including Day, sample a piece. Unfortunately, the candy has the same effect as drinking several triple martinis, and the next morning Day awakens in bed with Hudson and a marriage license. Outraged, she has the marriage annulled and transfers to the California branch of the company. Nine months later the stars are remarried in the maternity ward. Very funny, with a great cast of supporting players, especially Randall, LOVER COME BACK was nominated by the Academy for Best Screenplay. leave a comment
