LOVE IS ALL THERE IS

A well-intentioned comedy that's full of heart but just isn't very funny. Set on City Island, an isolated speck of land that's nominally part of the Bronx, the setup is simple: Two loudly Italian families of rival caterers -- the Cappamezzas (Joseph Bologna and Lanie Kazan) and the Malacicis (Paul Sorvino and Barbara Carrera) -- are thrown into a tizzy when young Rosario Cappamezzo (Nathaniel Marston) and Gina Malacici (Angelina Jolie) fall in love. This contemporary gloss on Romeo and Juliet resolves itself not in sword fights or rumbles, but in a lot of very noisy carrying-on. Some viewers will doubtless be amused, but it will strike others as pandering to unattractive ethnic stereotypes (regardless of the fact that cowriter and -director Bologna is himself of Italian extraction). At least no one's uncle in the Mafia butts in. The humor leans heavily to toilet jokes and smutty names for body parts. The husband and wife team of Bologna and Renee Taylor are also responsible for the Oscar-nominated LOVERS AND OTHER STRANGERS and the slight but incisive MADE FOR EACH OTHER, both of which are in an entirely different league from this bit of fluff. leave a comment
