The brief life of soprano Grace Moore is given the full screen biography treatment here, complete with Technicolor and the usual factual errors. The saga begins with Moore at age eight (played by Corcoran), stuck in Tennessee, but already demonstrating the talent and determination that would soon serve her well. Desperate to become a singer, the youngster persuades her father to let her pursue her dream. As an adolescent (played by Grayson) she runs away from home, heading for New York in search of fame and fortune. It's a long road to stardom, and Grace is forced to sing for her supper in a nightclub before a roller-coaster ride of events finally catapults her to the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House. There she brings down the house with her performance as Mimi in "La Boheme," which garners an incredible 28 curtain calls. The film ends with Grace on top, and does not deal with the soprano's tragic death in a Copenhagen plane crash in 1947 at age 46. Making his film debut is a very young Merv Griffin, who provides an early romantic interest for Grayson. Songs include, "The Kiss Waltz," "Time on My Hands" (Harold Adamson, Mark Gordon, Vincent Youmans), "Remember" (Irving Berlin), "I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate" (Armand J. Piron, Peter Bocage), "Ciribiribin" (Harry James, Jack Lawrence, A. Pestalozza), excerpts from "The Marriage of Figaro" (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart), "Faust" (Charles Francis Gounod) and "La Boheme" (Giacomo Puccini). leave a comment
