Love Story: Review

At a French manor, adolescent Joyeux falls in love with the manager of the estate (Pigaut). The girl is hampered in the romance because her jealous governess (Robinson) dreams of a higher station. Joyeux is supported, though, by her father (Debucourt) and the drama comes to a satisfying conclusion. Joyeux gives a rich, honest portrayal of a young girl in love and makes the seemingly tired plot fresh and energetic. She's given good support by the cast under tightly controlled direction. The design accurately captures Paris in the 1880s. Released in France in 1943, four years before the director's hugely successful DEVIL IN THE FLESH, LOVE STORY appeared nearly simultaneously with DEVIL in the U.S. It suffered by comparison, and was also hampered by poor subtitling.
