In Bardot and director Vadim's second-to-last collaboration (it would be ten years until their final film, IF DON JUAN WERE A WOMAN, together), Bardot plays a 25-year-old rich Parisian who goes to Dijon to collect an inheritance. There she unwittingly foils the suicide attempt of Hossein, a penniless alcoholic, who is somewhat manic and tells Bardot that he owes her his life and soul. Fascinated by this crazed man, Bardot allows herself to be seduced by him, and soon they are living together. Their life is less than blissful, however, as all that interests Hossein are drinking, reading mystery novels, and sex. He constantly abuses Bardot, but she stays because she is hopelessly in love with him. Despite his strong attempts to alienate her, Bardot does not leave until, at a party, he seduces a prostitute in her presence. At that Bardot walks out, but she and Hossein are reunited when he declares his love and proposes marriage. Reportedly, Bardot said that she made this less-than-successful film as a favor to Vadim. She considered herself indebted to Vadim for his help in staging her comeback following her own suicide attempt in 1960. (In French; English subtitles.) leave a comment
