The basic flaw in this mediocre comedy is the premise that hotel millionairess Ritter would have to find a matchmaker for her three daughters, Newmar, Gaynor, and Parrish--three of the most curvaceous women in movies. Early along we see Ritter, in her private helicopter, flying over lawyer Douglas' sailboat. Although she's his most lucrative client, he was trying to avoid her by going out in his boat. She commands him to manage the girls' estates and to find all three of them suitable husbands. She sends Bendix, the security chief of her hotel chain, to shadow Douglas and make sure he's carrying out her orders. Gaynor, the most level-headed of the three, winds up with Douglas. Parrish, a beatnik patroness of bizarre modern artists, is paired with William Windom. Health-food fanatic Newmar gets Richard Sargent, a mild-mannered IRS clerk. The film ends with a triple wedding. The only funny part in the movie is Gig Young's. In yet another of his drunken playboy roles, he is delightful, a 1960's version of the 1940's Jack Norton. This movie looks great, with lots of color, superb costumes, and lovely art direction. However, the script by Markes and Morris has no sparkle and Michael Gordon's direction is unimaginative in the extreme. Given a good script Gordon can produce fine results, as in CYRANO DE BERGERAC, ANOTHER PART OF THE FOREST, or even the lightweight but funny PILLOW TALK. Location shooting for this film was done in San Francisco, with interiors shot on the Universal lot. It was originally called THREE ON A MATCH, then THREE WAY MATCH. Bowery Boy Billy Halop is seen briefly as the elevator operator. Burlesque comic Joey Faye also appears in a bit role. leave a comment
