Love Me Forever: Review

Successful attempt at combining opera and crime (ranking the film as a predecessor to Francis Ford Coppola's COTTON CLUB) has Carrillo as a hood with a weakness for opera. He hears Moore sing and immediately falls for her. He spends all his time and money promoting her career, even to the point of building a club for her. Moore, however, has her affections pointed toward someone else. Carrillo gets into a jam with a rival gang when he cannot pay his debts. The direction is fairly even, blending the gangster story with the opera material. The script gets a bit sappy at points, but the production values are high, with realistic replicas of the Metropolitan Opera and a fancy nightclub. Musical numbers are all sung brilliantly by Moore and include: "Love Me Forever," "Whoa" (Gus Kahn, Victor Schertzinger), selections from the operas "La Boheme" (Puccini) and "Rigoletto" (Verdi), "II Bacio" (Luigi Arditi), and "Funiculi-Funicula" (Luigi Denza). leave a comment
