Another entry in the "Andy Hardy" series extolling the small-town American virtues that movie mogul Louis B. Mayer loved so much, this picture proved to be one of the highest grossing films for MGM in 1938 and also marked Judy Garland's first appearance in the series. In this episode, Andy (Mickey Rooney) angers his girl friend, Polly Benedict (Ann Rutherford), when he agrees to escort his buddy's "dishy" girl, Cynthia Potter (Lana Turner, in her first MGM appearance), for a fee, so that he can pay off the car he just bought. When Betsy Booth (Judy Garland) pops up to visit her aunt and uncle, Andy quickly dismisses her as nothing but a kid--until he hears her sing at a local dance. She quickly becomes another girl problem for Andy, but she sets him straight, pronto. The entire cast give excellent performances under the skilled direction of George B. Seitz. The wholesome script was written by William Ludwig, a young lawyer from New York who moved west for his health and got a job in MGM's Junior Writing Department. In 1942 the "Andy Hardy" series won an award certificate at the Oscar ceremonies for "Achievement in Representing the American Way of Life." leave a comment
