There's plenty of love here, though, curiously, there's not a bit of it before breakfast. Romero works for Foster, a wealthy man who dabbles in the oil business. Both of them are, understandably, in love with Lombard. To get rid of his competition, Foster offers Romero a chance to run the company's operations far away in Japan, and Romero snaps at the opportunity, much to Lombard's dismay. At the same time, Foster arranges for comely Lawford to sail on the ship that Romero is to take. She's a countess with charm oozing from every delicate pore, and Foster reckons that Romero will never be able to resist her combination of title, money, and beauty. Though Lombard prefers Romero, Foster moves in on her now that his rival is out of the way. She tolerates him, with virtually no show of affection, until Romero sends her an overseas telegram saying that he's going to marry Lawford. That settles it and she decides to give Foster her hand. Then, just before the wedding is to take place, she decides she's made the wrong move and pleads with Romero to come back. Further, once she figures out that Foster arranged the whole thing between Romero and Lawford, she feels that he has gone beyond mere matchmaking and into the realm of manipulation, so she breaks off their engagement. Later, on Foster's yacht, she understands that he did it all because he loves her. After a contrived accident at sea, the two are finally united by the ship's captain, a bogus piece of business needed to put a cute capper on the film. LOVE BEFORE BREAKFAST is a noisy picture with harangues by the handful, some of them funny, some of them flat. Everyone in the picture is good, though the script is not up to their standards. Even so, it's a fair example of what passed for "screwball' comedy of the 1930s, albeit in lesser hands than those of Howard Hawks. leave a comment
