Jimmie Davis plays himself in this true story of his rise from sharecropper's son to governor of Louisiana. The plot concentrates on Davis' desire for a good education, his career as a professor in a women's college, and his time spent as a toughened police commissioner. Davis' eccentric way of getting voter interest was through his singing. In this picture he performs several numbers: "You Are My Sunshine," "Nobody's Darling but Mine," "It Makes No Difference," "There's a New Moon over My Shoulder," "Let's Be Sweethearts Again," and "You Won't Be Satisfied That Way." Miller performs "Basin Street" and "Old Man Mose." The performances are adequate, though Davis is a bit self-conscious; the direction is documentary in style, with an authentic Louisiana setting. leave a comment
