This successful screen adaptation of the popular Broadway musical included many performers from the original cast. Moore is a righteous US Senator investigating political corruption; Hope plays the innocent who has inadvertently been set up. The musical numbers are performed well and the costumes are lavish. Hope and Moore effectively change from comedy to seriousness when the script calls for it. The film earned Academy Award nominations for its cinematography and its interior decoration. The songs include, "Louisiana Purchase" (Irving Berlin--sung by Dona Drake), "You're Lonely and I'm Lonely" (sung by Vera Zorina, Victor Moore), "It's a Lovely Day Tomorrow" (Berlin), "Prologue: Take a Letter to Paramount Pictures," "Before the Picture Starts," "Dance with Me (At the Mardi Gras)." leave a comment
