Yes, it's a bit of a puff piece, but Lou Reed -- who gave his blessing and full cooperation to this stylish and informative overview of his career -- probably wouldn't have it any other way. Originally produced for the PBS series American Masters and directed by friend, photographer and first-time filmmaker Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, the film makes a case for Reed as an important musician and urban folk-poet whose talent transcends the strictures of rock 'n' roll. Based on the evidence presented, it's a pretty compelling argument. Greenfield-Sanders uses a series of interviews with Reed and such fans, disciples and former bandmates as David Bowie, Patti Smith and John Cale, as well as a fabulous collection of vintage footage and photos to chronicle the different phases of Reed's ongoing musical evolution, from his early days with Andy Warhol and the enormously influential Velvet Underground; Reed's subsequent incarnation as the platinum-blond phantom of glam rock; his mid-'70s status as the elder statesman of punk rock; to his most recent solo work and his projects with Cale and the experimental theater impresario Robert Wilson. Anyone looking for the gory details of Reed's private life won't find them here: Reed steadfastly denies the autobiographical dimension of his disturbing lyrics, and Greenfield-Sanders doesn't press the point. Still, the film serves as a valuable primer for the uninitiated, and fans will no doubt appreciate the loving tribute. leave a comment --Ken Fox
