Less a lot like love than a lot like WHEN HARRY MET SALLY... (1989), CALENDAR GIRLS (2003) director Nigel Cole's romantic comedy involves star-crossed cuties Oliver (Ashton Kutcher) and Emily (Amanda Peet), who keep meeting at crucial, life-changing moments. They never argue about whether or not men and women can have platonic relationships, but they do regularly acknowledge their mutual chemistry while staunchly avoiding commitment. The story starts seven years before the present, as Los Angeles-based Oliver, fresh out of college, enmeshed in a haphazard job search and en route to visit his brother (Ty Giordano) in New York, joins the Mile High club courtesy of punky Emily. Despite her efforts to ditch the too-sweet looking Ollie, they have a few more encounters in New York, culminating in a $50 bet that in six years the optimistic Ollie will have found his dream job with an Internet company and married the perfect woman. Three years later, aspiring actress Emily is all alone on New Year's Eve, having recently been dumped by her live-in boyfriend. She finds Ollie's number tucked away in her little black book and they share a sweet evening atwitter with romantic possibility. But he's moving to San Francisco the very next day, which precludes a long-term love affair. Over the next few years, they meet at random intervals after breakups, but they seem destined to grasp the opportunities in front of them. While Kutcher is charming, endearing and, to all appearances, perfect boyfriend material — especially when he's signing with his hearing-impaired brother — Peet is merely passable, only shining during one terrific scene that attempts to capture the craziness of Meg Ryan's memorable diner sequence in WHEN HARRY MET SALLY.... They're better together than they are on their own, and the combination of Oliver and Emily's travails and the '90s-centric clothing and soundtrack is enjoyable and funny enough that it seems churlish to harp on anachronisms, slackly paced sequences and the hugely improbable events required to keep these obvious soul mates apart. leave a comment --Angel Cohn
