Set against the backdrop of the French-Algerian war of the late 1950s and early 1960s, this action film takes a considerably more commercial and entertaining look at the events covered (far more authentically) than did the previous year's BATTLE OF ALGIERS. After France's defeat at Dienbienphu in Indochina in 1954, a unit of paratroopers led by Lieutenant Colonel Pierre Raspeguy (Anthony Quinn) is sent to North Africa to quiet the Algerian freedom fighters. One of the unit's officers, Lieutennt Ben Mahidi (George Segal), joins forces with the rebels. Raspeguy, meanwhile, takes up with Countess de Clairefons (Michele Morgan), a wealthy beauty widowed when her husband, a general, was killed in Asia. Raspeguy is well below her socially, but her attraction to him is such that she gets him posted to Algeria, where she hopes he can quickly rise from lieutenant colonel to general. If he comes back a general, she will marry him. Raspeguy takes over a ragged unit and persuades his two wartime comrades, Captain Philippe Esclavier (Alain Delon) and Captain Boisfeuras (Maurice Ronet), to help get the ragtags into shape. The unit's plans misfire, however, when Esclavier becomes involved with Aicha (Claudia Cardinale). Unknown to Esclavier, Aicha is Lieutenant Mahidi's sister, and she is reporting Raspeguy's every move back to her brother. Quinn turns in a dynamic performance in his unsympathetic role, that of a quasi-mercenary who is fighting for personal glory and the hand of the woman he loves. Credit must go to director Mark Robson, who manages to balance the intimacy of romance with the violence of war. leave a comment
