The true story of a light-skinned African-American doctor and his family who have passed for white in a New England town. The film concentrates on the problems the doctor, Ferrer (in his screen debut), has maintaining the lie, and the radical adjustment the children are forced to make when their real race is known. The film neatly stays away from melodrama and makes a strong statement against prejudice. Producer de Rochemont displays his documentarist colors in this film, reflecting his strong experience in the field: he was the originator of the "March of Time" series of news/documentary shorts and brought many of his cohorts in that venture with him when he formed his own production company. leave a comment
