Based on the featherweight humor manual How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days: The Universal Don'ts of Dating, this romantic comedy actually addresses the genre's biggest contemporary challenge: Obstacles to romance that are both serious enough to believe and sufficiently lightweight to be funny are rare in an anything-goes world. Cute magazine writer Andie (Kate Hudson) has to woo and dump a guy in 10 days so she can write a career-making article for her "How to..." column. Her dragon-lady editor (Bebe Neuwirth, apparently inspired by Vogue's notorious Anna Wintour) at the relentlessly shallow "Composure" magazine, whose journalistic integrity apparently exceeds that of many newspaper editors, will accept nothing less than Andie's step-by-step account of alienating a real guy. Cute, commitment-phobic, beer-and-sports-loving adman Ben (Matthew McConaughey) must hold onto a girl for 10 days to convince his boss (Robert Klein) he deserves a shot at an upscale campaign. If Ben can't turn his inner caveman into Mr. Sensitivity for 10 days, how can he expect to market an emotionally loaded, big-ticket item like diamond jewelry? Slinky rival executives Judy Spears (Michael Michele) and Judy Green (Shalom Harlow), who know all about Andie's man-repelling assignment, make sure she's the girl Ben is assigned to court, figuring the DeLauer diamond account will soon be theirs. Sure enough, after a magical first date, Andie draws on the collective wisdom of her "Composure" coworkers, who've estranged scads of men with their neediness, baby talk, jealousy and incessant need to be reassured they're not fat, to drive Ben away. She gives his male member a frou-frou nickname, fills his apartment with girlie stuff, buys matching outfits and yammers about their relationship before they have anything resembling one. And to her amazement, he puts up with it and comes back for more. Each unaware that the other's behavior is being dictated by professional ambition, they stick together long enough for real love to take root and blossom. But what will happen when the truth comes out? Though something less than a masterpiece of the genre, this good-natured skirmish in the war between men and women benefits from Hudson's thoroughly charming performance. The strong supporting cast includes Kathryn Hahn and Annie Parisse as her friends, Adam Goldberg and Thomas Lennon as his, and legendary chanteuse Liliane Montevecchi in a brief but memorable turn as the imperious Mrs. DeLauer. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
