Jones, a Polish refugee, is recruited by the head of British intelligence, Richardson, to go into East Germany to verify the existence of some missile sites. While sneaking across the border, Jones is forced to kill a guard, leaving him shaken. Once behind the Iron Curtain, he does his best
to evade East German troops and, with the help of a young German woman, Degermark, he tries to radio the information he discovers back to England. Adapted from John Le Carre's novel, this downbeat espionage film was screenwriter Pierson's debut as a director; however, it is something of a
disappointment from the man who wrote CAT BALLOU and COOL HAND LUKE.
