Carroll plays the noted British actress Joan Winmill, who suffered from suicidal tendencies until she finally had a religious conversion. The story is told mainly in flashback. We see the actress' unhappy childhood and the death of her mother and a cousin. Her grandmother also suffers from similar psychological troubles and falls victim to a nervous breakdown.
