Censors raised such a stink over Adrian Lyne's dreamy adaptation of Vladmir Nabokov's scandalous novel that it's hard not to see the film through a scrim of fevered controversy. But on its own merits, this wonderfully acted take on Humbert Humbert (Jeremy Irons) and his indecent obsession with gum-snapping jailbait "Lolita" Hayes (Dominique Swain) is more tragic than shocking, and remains truer to Nabokov's vision than Stanley Kubrick's more celebrated 1962 version.
