1976, Movie, PG, 118 mins

starstarstarstar
A hit-and-miss futuristic film about a world in which nobody is allowed to live past 30 years. The story takes place in a man-made, self-contained city, where there is no crime, hunger, or strife. The catch is that at the age of 30, everyone must go through a ritual called "renewal," in which the participants float toward the top of an arena to be zapped by disintegration rays. Supposedly, if a participant makes it to the top, he will live another 30 years, but the ritual is... read more leave a comment

Logan's Run Back on Its Feet, and More Movie News

Someone wake up Farrah Fawcett. On second thought, we don't have time for that. A reboot of 1976's Logan's Run is back on track, with Joseph Kosinski now at the helm. Long in gestation, the project has had at different times the likes of Bryan Singer (who bailed to do Superman Returns) and James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) attached to direct.... Also per the Reporter, former model Natalie Martinez is in talks to play the romantic lead opposite Jason Statham in Death Race, Paul W.S. Anderson's remake of the cult classic.... Per Variety, Peter Berg will adapt and direct Lone Survivor, based on the story of Marcus Luttrell, a Navy SEAL who led a mission into Afghanistan to kill a Taliban leader but was the only one to emerge alive.... Penélope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Javier Bardem are the latest names being eyed for Rob Marshall's Nine. read more

Inside the DVD for Vendetta!

Set against the futuristic landscape of a totalitarian Britain, V for Vendetta tells the story of Evey (Natalie Portman), a young woman who is rescued from an alley assault by a man (Hugo Weaving) wearing a Guy Fawkes mask and known only as "V." With Evey at his side, V does his best to incite a revolution against tyranny and oppression, setting the stage for a dark, compelling and bitingly allegorical tale. On the occasion of the film's DVD release, TVGuide.com spoke with James McTeigue read more

It seems like every other ...

Question: It seems like every other movie I see advertised is based on a TV show, like The Dukes of Hazzard. But what about the other way around? I know there was a series based on My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but what other TV series have been based on a movie, and were any of them good?

Answer: There have been a handful of top-notch TV shows based on movies. The flop Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) was revived as Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003); Robert Altman's acerbic M*A*S*H* (1970) became the long-running M*A*S*H (1972-1983); Neil Simon read more

Lost Shannon was killed...

LostShannon was killed by Ana-Lucia.... I so knew that chick was just up to no good. I just knew it! Sure it was an accident — Shannon and Sayid heard whispering, Ana and the other tailies heard weird voices and then bam, one bullet, one gun and one dead survivor. Up until that point in the evening, I was really getting a bit jealous of Shan's island life. She's got Sayid, who built her a hut — which he claims he does "for all the girls I meet on deserted islands" (if that's true, sign me up!) — and professed his undying love for her. Sure she's got hallucinations of Walt (who, according to the local radio station that played his ramblings backwards, apparently said, "The Others are coming; they're close"). But considering that Shan had been hopping from place to place for s read more

The premise of The Island ...

Question: The premise of The Island reminds me of a very bad and cheesy '70s movie that was used in an episode of MST3K. Am I right, and is it a remake of this horrible film?

Answer: The Island (2005) is not a remake of Parts: The Clonus Horror (1979), but it "borrows" shamelessly from this low-budget sci-fi film's premise: that a colony of healthy, pampered people living in a tightly supervised community because the rest of the world has supposedly undergone some calamity are actually clones bred to serve as spare parts for rich people. And yes, Clonus was lambasted on TV's Mystery Science Theater 3000. While I wouldn't go so far as to say Clonus is a good movie, I would argue that it deserves credit for dealing with issues that are even timelier now than they were 25 years ago, even if it owes its o read more
