Lock Up

1989, Movie, R, 106 mins

Pity poor Sylvester Stallone, whose macho everyman must once again suffer the slings and arrows of a cruel and heartless society! In LOCK UP, Frank Leone (Stallone) is a basically decent guy who has been serving time in prison after putting a mean hurt on a group of thugs who roughed up his elderly mentor. Earlier, when sadistic Warden Drumgoole (Donald Sutherland) refused to let model-prisoner Frank out of jail on a weekend pass to visit his dying mentor, Frank escaped and went to the media with tales of Drumgoole's abuse of inmates. Drumgoole was reprimanded and sent to preside over one of the worst prisons in the entire system. But the obviously psychotic warden wants revenge and has Frank transferred to his hell-hole for the last six months of his sentence. Employing every prison-movie cliche in the book, the film becomes increasingly absurd with each scene. The script seems to have been stripped of anything resembling balance or ambiguity. Stallone's character is completely good, while Sutherland is left to play pure evil. An excellent actor, poor Sutherland struggles mightily to wring something of value out of his woefully one-dimensional role. With nothing in the way of performance to cling to, the audience is left to marvel at the mounting inanity of each scene. leave a comment
