LOADED | BLOODY WEEKEND

End-of-the-century anomie or self-centered fussing and moaning? You be the judge. A gang of overprivileged British Gen-Xers repairs to a gloomy country estate to shoot an arty horror video. They whine about their problems and horse around on camera, then drop a ton of acid and do something really stupid. Perhaps if the picture got off to a brisker start, someone might still be awake by the time the big moral dilemma presents itself. First-time writer-director Anna Campion (sister of art-house darling Jane) aspires to paint a portrait of a cynical, enervated generation. But the cast members are so undifferentiated that only Thandie Newton and Mathew Eggleton stand out -- if only by virtue of race -- and it's hard to give a damn about their various fates. The film ends just as it's getting started, and it's still not a moment too soon. leave a comment
