The Disney Channel's popular tweenybopper star, Hillary Duff, gets the full fairy tale treatment in a feature adaptation sure to delight young Lizzie McGuire fans. Likeable, clutzy 15-year-old Lizzie (Hilary Duff) has completely embarrassed herself by giving an awkward speech and destroying all the decorations at her junior high school graduation. She can't wait to get out of the country and away from the condescending eye of snooty, popular classmate Kate (Ashlie Brillault). But as luck would have it, Lizzie and Kate wind up on the same class trip to Rome and, worse, the archenemies must share a room. The situation's saving grace is that Lizzie's best friend, Gordo (Adam Lamberg), is also along for this globetrotting adventure. On their first day of sightseeing, Lizzie and Gordo make a wish at the famed Trevi fountain. Within moments, Lizzie is bedazzled by Italian pop star Paolo (Yani Gellman), who mistakes the American teen for his dark-haired singing partner, Isabella (Duff again), with whom he's had a falling out. Lizzie is soon begging Gordo to help her find a way to sneak out from under the watchful eye of their intimidating chaperone, Mrs. Ungermeyer (Alex Borstein), so that she can spend time with her new innamorata; Gordo complies, but has his doubts about the smooth operator's motives. Paolo takes Lizzie on a high-speed tour around Rome and begs her to pose as Isabella at the upcoming International Music Video Awards; despite the graduation debacle, she agrees to try and is soon caught up in the whirlwind of celebrity life. By and large, the film sticks to its television roots, right down to the fanciful sequences in which Lizzie's animated alter ego lets the audience in on her innermost thoughts that are the series' trademark. Fans may be disappointed that some of the show's secondary characters, like Lizzie's pal Miranda, are AWOL from this Prince and the Pauper-style escapade, and some of the scenes involving Gellman are disappointingly flat. But Duff's affability and unintimidating charisma are evident when she's paired with the geeky and adorable Lamberg, and she has a good time with her dual role. The adult cast members seem to be enjoying themselves thoroughly: Borstein throws herself into Miss Ungermeyer's brassy, no-bull antics with evident relish, and Robert Carradine and Hallie Todd sparkle as Lizzie's clueless but perpetually well-meaning parents leave a comment --Angel Cohn
