No Living Witness

This is a cookbook film employing elements from various programmers and popular films. The result is a mixed bag containing some good performances and occasional spurts of creativity. Beery plays an unethical attorney. He's trying to cheat an out-of-town businessman with a phony racetrack scam. Roland is the good attorney who exposes Beery and saves the day. The ending, involving the comic efforts of the district attorney, an engagement ring, and his girl waiting at the train station, is right out of THE FRONT PAGE. The standout here is Naish in a relatively minor role. The dialog is a little bland considering the subject, but the direction moves briskly.
