This remake of JOHNNY DARK (1954) replaces Tony Curtis with James Darren as Casey Owens, an ex-GI and college dropout who cares more for cars than girls and works in his father's garage on a new gas turbine engine. When he meets Eadie (Pamela Tiffin), the sister of his hot-rodding buddy Chuck (Doug McClure), his interests broaden. The pair get engaged and head for San Francisco, where Casey works on building a prototype car for millionaire Stanford Rogers (Peter Mann). Owens is fired after he disregards Roger's advice and wrecks a car, but Owens scrounges up the cash to buy his engine back from Rogers and enters the Tri-State Endurance Race. He leaves the winner's circle a sober young man, ready to wed Eadie and return to school. In addition to a five songs by Bobby Darin (sung by Darren, The Surfaris, Joanie Summers, and Wink "The Joker's Wild" Martindale), the film features cameo appearances by racers Max Schumacher, Dick Whittinghill, Mickey Thompson, James Nelson, Duane Carter, Billy Krause, and Ron Miller. Nominated by the Academy for Best Sound Effects. leave a comment
