This eighth film in the Bond series marked the first appearance of Roger Moore as the superspy. Less macho than Sean Connery's Bond, Moore's fastidiously dressed 007 survives by his wits and injects more humor into the proceedings. Based loosely on Fleming's second novel, LIVE AND LET DIE shuttles Bond between New Orleans, New York, and the Caribbean. Aided by a tarot card-reading sexpot named Solitaire (Seymour) and resorting to the usual high-speed chases and gadgetry, Bond tries to put a stop to the scheming of Kotto, a Caribbean diplomat who plans to supply the US with free heroin, thus turning Americans into junkies dependent on him for survival. Despite Moore's debonair performance, the real stars here are the stuntmen, as the film features a breathtaking, crash-strewn motorboat chase in which Bond's boat literally jumps over a swampside road. In another of his exciting escapes, Bond (actually a local farmer acting as stuntman) runs across the backs of several snapping crocodiles. Paul McCartney and Wings supplied the title song, which was nominated for a Best Song Oscar and went on to become a Top 10 hit. leave a comment
