This is an interesting but raw independent production, shot in 16mm and starring John Savage as a concerned probation officer who travels through Boston's "Combat Zone," dealing with subhuman types and trying to save a few. One person Savage deems worthy of redemption is Tracy Pollan, a curvaceous 18-year-old blonde who gets into trouble with drug pushers and other gutter types. Savage follows her about and then tries to persuade her to discard such notorious friends. He even appeals to her father, a blustering money man who tells him his daughter is all right on her own. The charismatic probation officer also becomes involved with a strip-joint owner who tries to compromise him when Savage interferes with his operations and drugged-out naked dancers. Savage's attempt to save Pollan is not dissimilar to the angst of TAXI DRIVER's Robert De Niro in attempting to redeem a young prostitute, but this film is much less violent, though its wholly seedy nature, gutter talk, and occasional mayhem are certainly not suitable for youngsters. The title of the film was taken from the famous Raymond Chandler novel but has little to do with that much more original, exciting story. leave a comment
