LITTLE ROMANCE, A
starstarstarstar
Completely charming, this teenage romantic comedy tells the innocent tale of a pair of 13-year-olds who fall in love in Paris. Lauren (Diane Lane) is living in Paris with her understanding stepfather (Arthur Hill) and her floozy mother (Sally Kellerman). While visiting the set of a movie production, Lauren meets Daniel (Thelonious Bernard), a lower-class youngster with a system for playing the horses and a fascination with both Robert Redford and Humphrey Bogart. Daniel becomes "Bogie" to Lauren's "Bacall," and before long they've fallen for each other in the most innocent of ways. Their attachment strengthens when they discover they both have extremely high IQs and interests in philosophy, qualities that usually embarrass them. Their adventures begin when they meet Julius (Laurence Olivier), a friendly old scoundrel who informs them of an age-old romantic legend: If two lovers kiss under Venice's Bridge of Sighs in a gondola at sunset when the bells toll, their love will last forever. The two youngsters are determined to try out the legend for themselves, but they cannot travel without a guardian and must bring along Julius, who isn't quite what he appears to be. This sweet and innocent movie about teen romance won't fail to bring a tear and a smile in its heart-tugging finale. Delerue's score is lovely.
