Little Nikita

1988, Movie, PG, 98 mins

A timely espionage thriller with gaping plot holes, LITTLE NIKITA stars Phoenix as a seemingly average teenager, except in one respect--his real name is Nikita. That's because his parents are Soviet "sleeper" agents who 20 years ago were given new identities and homes in the US. When Jeffrey applies for admission to the Air Force Academy, FBI agent Poitier notices some incongruous personal data. This leads to an investigation that puts Phoenix and Poitier in the middle of a dangerous game of international intrigue. The premise of LITTLE NIKITA is a great one--worthy of Alfred Hitchcock--but the execution here by director Benjamin is as rickety as can be. About two-thirds into LITTLE NIKITA, the film deteriorates so rapidly that the characters cannot help but fall through the holes. Adding to the frustration of watching this otherwise-promising movie fall apart are the superb performances by Poitier and Phoenix. leave a comment
